Studied violin since early age and received his formal voice training at the age of 18. In 1980, he won the first prize in singing at the International Artist Music Festival in Miami and was invited to give numerous recitals around cities in USA. In 1983, he pursued his study at the Indiana University where he was awarded Master of Music in singing performance. Jimmy has already performed widely as soloist with various orchestras and choirs since early 1970’s, both locally and overseas, including Bach’s Passions and Cantatas, Handel’s Messiah, Haydn’s Creation and The Seasons, Beethoven’s 9th Symphony and Missa Solemnis, Mendelssohn’s Elijah, Verdi’s Requiem, and the Requiems by Mozart, Brahms and Faure…to name a few.
Over the years, Jimmy has been the founder-conductor/music director of over ten choral groups and has conducted more than 30 choirs. He has been the Chorus Director and Conductor of Opera Hong Kong Chorus (2004-2013). Under his talented leadership, the chorus has achieved highly acclaimed performances in numerous opera productions. He is also an active leader in the church music scene.
Jimmy is a frequent adjudicator in many local and international choral/singing competitions. He is most fervent in promoting choral activities, including workshops and courses to further choral training. He has been the Music Master of St. Paul’s Co-educational College where its choirs and orchestras received numerous awards under his leadership. Formerly a voice and conducting faculty member at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts and University of Hong Kong, currently he teaches voice at the Hong Kong Baptist University and the Chinese University of Hong Kong.
